TALLY CHART
STEP 1
Read the title to discover what it is about: “Three Flags.” Then read the labels below the flags: Tanzania, Jamaica, The Bahamas.
STEP 2
Look at the chart below the flags and read the column headings. This tally chart is designed to help you count and record the number of flags that have certain colors and shapes.
The first column lists a color or number of triangles. Each time you count a flag with that feature, you add a tally mark to the second column. After you finish the tally, you count all the marks and record the total number in the last column.
TAKE A CLOSER LOOK
How many flags have the color black?
A 1
B 2
C 3
Use the filled in tally chart to discover the answer. Find the heading black and look at the data recorded in the second and third columns. How many tally marks are there? What number is shown as the total?
You can confirm that this tally is correct by looking at the flags and counting how many have the color black.
BE VIZ SMART ✺
When you use a tally chart, record the marks in sets of five. After you finish collecting the data, you can skip count by 5s to get a total count: 5, 10, 15, and so on. That’s a lot faster than counting the tally marks, one by one.
